How to find

Google Maps

The castle, belonging to the fortifications of the town of Mayen, was constructed by the prince bishops of Trier, destroyed in 1689 and rebuilt in 1700. Later it again was partly destroyed. Restored in 1918 the castle got its present appearance.

The visitor enters the castle through a baroque gate. It is worth climbing the 35 meter high Golotower. From here one has a great view over the town and the region. It is also worthwhile visiting the town wall with its arches, two towers and two gatehouses.

In the castle there is the Eifel-Museum with different collections: the legend of Genevieve, history of the castle and the town, folklore and handicraft objects, religious art, pictures of the Eifel. An exhibition on geology and slate mining will soon be added.
